How to Set Goals for Your Blog and Achieve Them

Blogging How to

Do you set goals for your blog?

Have you set any goals for 2013?

I love the New Year. I love how every year you get a chance to start over. Your slate gets wiped clean, and this year you can achieve your heart’s desires.

While January is full of hope, February brings on the reality. There is typically a reason why we have yet to achieve all our heart’s desires.

Is anyone else in that boat? You want so badly for your resolutions to stick, but history tells you they won’t.  Well, today I want to share about ways to make those goals and resolutions stick. So, tell that pessimist in the back of your mind to shush.

How to Set Blogging Goals

The first step to fulfilling your blogging goals this year is to first create the kind of goals that you can fulfill. Like I shared about in How to Achieve Unstoppable Strategic Blogging, there are 3 ingredients to fulfill your goals.

  1. Measurable
Here is an example of how NOT to make your goal measurable.

Goal: I want to blog more. The reason why this is a how NOT to is because there is no way to measure it. How do you know if you are blogging more?

Here is an example of how to:
Goal: I want to increase posting articles to my blog up to 3x a week.

Writing your goal this way makes it really easy to see how you are actually doing. Are you posting 3 times a week?

  2. Assessable
What I mean by assessable is the ability to evaluate your progress. This is easy especially if your goals are measurable. It is so important to check in with you goals and I would say to check them at least monthly. While many of us bloggers may work alone, it is also important to have someone to assess and evaluate your goals with us. This person can act just as a sounding board, but the accountability will strengthen your ability to achieve that goal.
  3. Achievable
To make your goals achievable is to set realistic goals. If you are working a full time job on top of maintaining a blog, blogging 5 times a week may be a bit unrealistic, and 2 times a week may be just right.

My Goal

One of my blogging goals for 2013 is:

I want to be ahead in my blog articles by 2 weeks.

Using the 3 ingredients to fulfill my goals:

  • I can measure it by how far ahead am I.
  • I can assess it by what can I do or what I am doing that helps me get ahead.
  • I know it is achievable because I’ve done it before.

What are your goals this year and how can you measure them, assess them and achieve them?

Excellent. And you’ve also written my exact 2013 Blog goals!

  2. I’m always chasing my blogging goals. It’s the first thing that gets dropped when I am busy! This year, it won’t be and I am committed to blogging at least twice per week.

  3. Great post, Christine! I think it’s so important to have SMART goals and then to make sure you achieve them. I think it’s horrible to have your audience think you’re going to post X number of times per week, and then you don’t post that number of times, or worse, you don’t post for an entire month! Awful! Setting goals like this should help most savvy bloggers to stay on track, AND to get better. 🙂
