How to Write Blog Articles Consistently

Do you struggle with consistently posting blog articles?

Do you love the idea of having a blog, but can’t seem to make it work?

Last week, we published an article called 5 Questions to Ask Yourself before Starting a Blog and you who read this blog article proved yourselves to be geniuses yet again. In the comment section, many seasoned blog writers pointed out the battle on blogging consistently.

In fact, Veronica Solorzano Athanasiou, from Oroklini Social Media pointed out that to really see the benefits of blogging, you need 52 articles. That means committing at least a year to consistent blogging.

Consistency is the issue, isn’t it? How do we make time for writing, formatting and publishing blog articles when we only have 24 hours in a day?

My Secret to Blogging Consistently

Today, I wanted to share with you my personal secret on how to blog consistently. I have been at battle with this for a while now and I’ve tried a few options.

Here are my experiences and what I’ve found to work best.

Blogging at Night

My days are really full, so one of the first options to staying consistent was to blog at night. If you are a night owl, this might be a really great option for you. For me, it wasn’t.

Why It Didn’t Work For Me

After putting my toddler down for the night, I found myself really exhausted. So heading to my computer to put in a couple of hours every night just didn’t work, even when I added a little red wine as company.

Blogging All Day

Another option that I tried to help me stay consistent at blogging was taking an entire day to blog. This one was a romantic intention for me. Oh to be able to write all day, I thought, how amazing…sigh…

Why It Didn’t Work For Me

My first issue was, β€œhow do I make the room to write for an entire day”? So, I picked Saturdays, which meant giving up a weekend day with my family. Suddenly, leaving became less and less romantic and more and more difficult.

Then, have you ever written article after article, after article, after article? One time my right arm hurt so badly that I just had to close my computer and commit another day to blogging.

What Works For Me

The way I’m able to write for multiple blogs, the way I’m able to write thousands of words a day and stay sane is by blogging super early in the mornings.

I’ve discovered that if I wake up and write the first thing in the morning before anyone gets up, I can get a lot of work done in less time. Here are the a few key points to making this work:

  • Making the coffee the night before. When I wake up before the sun, knowing that a fresh warm cup of coffee is already waiting for me makes all the difference.
  • Going to bed the night before. What I can’t do is stay up till 11 pm anymore. I have to get to bed before 10 pm every night.
  • I start writing before 6 am. This is the only way I can get my articles done before my day starts.

The benefits to starting my day with all my articles done are amazing. I’m less stressed, my work is better and my editor is happier.

Thanks for the mention Christine! I’ve also tried a few techniques and to work around my routine. I agree that Saturdays are for the family but Sunday evenings, after satisfying the family thirst can be a good option sometimes.
I get an itch if publishing day approaches and my articles are not ready. They have to be outlined at least in my mind. I’ve had a lot of distractions lately but certainly blogging as consistently as possible has helped me stay focused on the changes of digital marketing, which is my subject.
Always appreciate your support and your insights on how to become a better blogger.

    1. Hey Veronica,

You are very welcome for the shout out! I can see how Sunday evenings are a great time to get some blogging done. Thank you for suggesting it. I’m like you, I get “itchy” too if I haven’t had time to think through what I’m writing about. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this subject. πŸ™‚

You make some very good points here. I think I will take them to heart, being a blogging newbie. And I think I will look at some of your other articles also. Thank you for sharing your wonderful tips! It will save me alot of trial and error and time also!

    1. Hi Diane,
I’m so happy I could save you a little time and a little trial and error because that is my goal! If you have any questions about blogging just ask. Thank you for commenting.

  3. My take away from this blog is to experiment to find what will work for you. Clearly that is what you have done. I have taken on blogging weekly and all was going smoothly until I upped my game. Meaning I decided to add more content/value that requires research. Now it is taking me many more hours and I don’t have a system in place yet.

    1. Hi Roslyn,

I love your take away. πŸ™‚ Because you are right. The whole point is to experiment and find what helps you stay consistent. This article just provides what I’ve tried, failed and succeeded at.

It’s really hard to get into a grove, especially when you increase the amount of time needed when blogging. I’m pretty confident that you’ll soon find a system that works for you.

  4. I agree, consistency is key, yet with our busy lives blogging can be hard to keep up with. As an entrepreneur blogging is important to my business and clients. Finding what works for you and making that your routine is a great step. Also, plan your research, take notes and make sure you have that quiet space in which you can write will take much of the stress away. The more you stay consistent the easier blogging will become.

    1. Hi Meryl,

I love your tips – plan your research, takes notes, and blog in a quiet space. These are such great tips for helping to stay consistent. I’m like you, I need a quiet space for writing. Thank you so much for sharing. πŸ™‚

  5. Thanks for sharing what works for you when it comes to blogging. For me, I don’t have a “secret,” to blogging consistently. I blog when I feel like it. Sometimes it could be late evening, during the day or very early, when I cannot sleep. Maybe, I am weird like that. πŸ˜‰ BUT, one thing that I do need when blogging, is my coffee!!

    1. Hey Alexandra,

If that’s what works for you, awesome! I’m with you, coffee is key. I like to refer to my coffee as “kick you in the face” kind of coffee because I like it strong. πŸ™‚

  6. Some nice thoughts Christine, and I agree with night time and all day being tough to keep going. I too get up early and do what needs to be done whilst everyone else is sleeping, it seems to be my most productive time. I do however find it difficult at times to keep focussed on only writing articles during this time as there always seems to be so much to do and so little time through the rest of the day. Will need to focus more I think.

    1. Hey Ian,
I am familiar with that same problem. If I’m not careful, I find myself half way through an article and half way to 5 other projects as well. For me, it helps to give myself permission to simply blog for a few morning hours. It also helps keeping my to-do down to 5-7 items. πŸ™‚

  7. This is a great article! I’m more of a night owl than a morning person so I would definitely be more likely to get that in at night. It’s wonderful that you found a method that works for you! Thanks for sharing your tips! πŸ™‚

    1. Hey Robert,

I wish I was a night owl! The morning alarm always comes a little too early. πŸ˜‰ You are so welcome for the tips.

  8. Great post here! I agree it’s hard to find a good time. I usually write at night, even though I am already stressed out from the day so maybe I should change it up and see if this way works better.

    1. Hi Ashley,

If you are finding yourself stressed at night, then I would give it a least a try. You never know. Thank you so much for sharing. πŸ™‚

  9. Thanks for the info. I blog every weekday and I do it at nights mostly

    1. Hi Veronica,

You are welcome for the information. That’s great that you have a system that works for you. πŸ™‚

  10. Martha Giffen says:

I’m an early morning writer too. The main thing isn’t WHEN, it’s just GET IT DONE. That’s especially true for the new bloggers. Writing is just like any other muscle. The more you exercise it, the more it is easier to work. Also, joining a blog challenge like http://UltimateBlogChallenge.com helps people get the hang of it. Blog for 30 days straight and you will have formed a habit. Nice post!

    1. Hi Martha,

You bring up a great point. Sometimes it doesn’t matter when, you just have to get it done. πŸ˜‰ Thanks for sharing. πŸ™‚ I’ll have to check out that challenge.

  11. Great tips! And thank you for sharing WHY things you have tried didn’t work. It is so important to find what DOES work for you – and that can be as different as there are number of writers! It’s the dedication that also make it happen. I am glad you found a system. Your content is great!

    1. A. Lynn Jesus,

Thank you so much! You are so right, like Martha said too, sometimes it’s just about getting it done – dedication. Thanks again. πŸ™‚

  12. I have an offline business that can consume great masses of time. But once I decided I was going to blog weekly–uploading late Sunday for Monday delivery–it was just a done deal. No matter what time I finished. Only recently did I decide that, although it might mean a slight drop in readership, I preferred to “stress” on a Tuesday evening (for Wednesday delivery) than to let it mess up a weekend. I’m rigid with deadlines because I know if I waiver, I’ll lose momentum. And I’m at Article #185 or so … so I guess it’s worked!

    1. Hi Sharon,

I’m like you, if I miss a deadline I know I’m in trouble. Wow article #185, congratulations that’s amazing. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences.
