Cyber Monday 2009 Sales Results

Cyber Monday sales results for 2009 came in better than the forecasts for U.S. online retailers with an inspiring 13.7% increase over last year’s cyber kick-off according to Coremetrics.

Consumers spent an average dollar amount of 38% more over 2008’s Cyber Monday ($180.03 as compared to $130.24).  Apparel retailers lead the pack with the largest dollar amounts spent online with an increase of 26.4% year over year and jewelry retailers came in second place with an increase of 14.3%.

Chief strategy officer of Coremetrics, John Squire, stated, “We are seeing good online buying momentum because people are looking for the very best deals, and are going online for the most convenient way to shop.”  He continued to explain that the company expects to see “one more spike in online spending” when the end of free shipping offers are revealed.  Squire also gave the advice that retailers will “watch consumer behavior very carefully to gauge what’s working well and what they need to adjust.”

Shoppers will ultimately benefit from the final outcome as sellers “pull out all the stops” to persuade them to open their wallets and buy.

comScore reports that Cyber Monday online sales were up 5% as compared to last year reaching $887 million spent online.  This ties the online spending of December 9, 2008 – the heaviest online dollar generating day on record.
