The most popular online activities according to Nielsen Online include “Member Communities” accounting for 67% of the global online activities. The Member Communities category includes blogging and social networking. It has captured the fourth place as the most prevalent global online activity.
CEO of Nielsen Online, John Burbank stated, “Social networking has become a fundamental part of the global online experience.” Additional significant results about Member Communities from Nielsen’s study include:
- Social networking and blogging websites accounted for 1 in every 11 minutes online globally.
- The Internet audience using the social networking and blogging sites is becoming more varied with the largest increase coming from the age group of 35-49 which accounted for an increase of 11.3 million global users.
- The use of mobile devices to access social networking sites is increasing. Nielsen reported that the largest expansion was for UK mobile Internet consumers at 23% or 2 million as compared to the U.S. coming in at 19% or 10.6 million.
The top five most popular online activities globally according to Nielsen as of December 2008 are:
