Cyber Monday 2009
Cyber Monday is a term coined by Shop.org, a National Retail Federation division, for the Monday that immediately follows the Thanksgiving holiday. It is typically one of the largest Internet sales producing shopping days of the year when online retailers offer Internet deals. 2009 Cyber Monday sales predictions indicate a mixed forecast for those turning to the web to bargain shop for this holiday season.
Shop.org’s BIGresearch survey that was conducted on November 28 concluded that an estimated 100 million or 42% of Americans plan to shop online on Cyber Monday. This amounts to 15 million more American cyber shoppers from the same day in 2008. The LATimes reported that Shop.org surveyed 60 retailers and 70% of the respondents “expected online sales to grow this holiday over last year”.
The Nielsen Company conducted its annual holiday retail survey and reported the results in the blog post, Little Holiday Cheer Ahead for Online Retail. It revealed that “many consumers intend to spend less and save more this holiday season” with 73% of those surveyed stating they had plans to do some shopping online this holiday season. This compares to 71% last year. Of those planning to shop online this year only 31% revealed that they intend to spend more than $300 online, down from 2008’s 42%.
ComScore, a global leader in measuring the digital world and preferred source of digital marketing intelligence, has projected a minor 3% increase in online sales in the press release, comScore Forecasts 3 Percent Growth for 2009 Holiday E-Commerce Spending. This equates to a slight increase of $28.8 billion in online sales as compared to last year’s $28 billion last year.
With the predictions previously made, conjectures for the 2009 online shopping season painted lack luster holiday sales. On the positive front, ComScore reported on November 29 that $595 million was spent online on Black Friday, the traditional brick and motor store kick off to the holiday season. This equates to an inspiring 11% increase over 2008’s Black Friday online sales.
As holiday shoppers search for bargains on Cyber Monday and throughout the holiday season, it will be more important than ever for online retailers to capture sales with compelling incentives including discounts and free shipping.
