The Secret to Growing Your Online Influence

The Secret to Growing Your Online Influence

Would you like to be the one who people all over the map turn to when making a decision?

Did you know that blogging is the 3rd most influential online service?

Let’s take a second to reflect on the last 10 years. 10 years ago, how did you market your company? Or, let’s even look back 5 years. Do you remember when this new buzz word- blog- came across your desk, right next to your typewriter?

Social Media 5 Years Later

In all seriousness though, how much has marketing changed with the onset of social media? Social media has opened a whole new way to reach the world and add our influence to it. Fast-forward to today and social media is everywhere. Companies small and big are increasing their social media budgets and investing more time and more money.

Where Do You Invest Time and Money?

You have to wonder, with so many different ways to use social media, which one is going to cause the most influence? Which one is going to give you the return on your investment?

TechnoratiMedia produced their 2013 Digital Influence Report and their findings state:

Though blogs and influencers don’t get a large portion of brands’ digital spend, they rank high with consumers for trust, popularity and influence. When making overall purchase decisions, for consumers, blogs trail only behind retail and brand sites. With regard to overall sources for information on the Internet, blogs rank among the top five “most trustworthy” sources.”

Blogging is proving to be a great use of time and money. Let me take a second to break down how blogging ranked in consumer behaviors.

  • Online Service Used: Blogging ranked 5th out of 13.
  • Online Services Most Trusted: 5th out of 13.
  • Online Services Shared From the Most: 3rd out of 13.
  • Online Services Most Likely To Influence A Purchase: 3rd out of 13.

Blogging ranked in the top 5 for all the consumer behavior categories. However, according to that same report only 6% of our social media budget invests into blogging.

    I’m not surprised.
I spend a lot of time reading blogs for all sorts of reasons.
I like the part about it being a marathon and not a race.
    Thank you, Christine.
I’m looking forward to your blog tips and tricks.

Couldn’t agree more! According to HubSpot, companies with blogs also get 55% more traffic to their websites than those that don’t blog. To me, it comes before social. You need to have a property you own to send people back to via social channels. Not only that, but it helps with SEO and link-building and is so much more affordable than so many other methods of doing so! Great article.

  4. I have had a blog for over a year and a half now, but just started blogging regularly this year. I should have started sooner! Just writing on a weekly basis has helped increase the traffic to my site. It has also brought me business! One client told me the only reason they hired me vs my competitor was due because of my blog.

I can actually believe that only 6% of the social media budget is spent on blogging. Lots of people don’t understnad the importance.
