Blog Writing Style - The Quirky Things We Write

We all have our little quirks, but have you ever noticed them come through your blog writing style?

Don’t waste your life trying to impress other people. Do what you love, love what you do.” – Unknown

Come on, admit it. You may have a few quirks or characteristics that are unique to you. Whether you like to wear mismatching socks, dancing in the rain, or eating dessert first, we all have something quirky about us. Our quirkiness makes us who we are. Have you ever noticed if your quirkiness is coming through in your writing? I know that I have.

Blog Writing Style – My Quirkiness

It took me a while to notice. It happened about 6-9 months ago, and I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it. A few months, back I noticed my own quirkiness come through my writing. Have you ever noticed how I start every article I write? It’s always,

Hello and happy Tuesday” or “Hello everyone and happy Tuesday”.

It’s funny, but I write that because I want to connect with you, my reader. I want each of you to feel greeted and that I’m sharing directly with you. I want my readers to know they are important to me. So, when I write, I imagine that each of you feel greeted by my first sentence. What I didn’t realize was that I do it every time, all the time. I mean 9 times a week.

If you’ve been reading this blog for anytime now, you’ll know that most of what I put up here is based off of personal experience. That personal experience comes from ghost writing 8 blog articles a week for over a year now. My desire is to make blogging easy for you, but my day job really is ghost writing.

So, guess what my opening sentence is when I’m ghost writing?

Hello and happy whatever day it is!”

It comes from that same place, my quirkiness, which in this case is to make every reader feel like they are getting a personal experience.

Thankfully, I work with an amazing editor, Robin Strohmaier, who caught my little quirk way before I even noticed. This was a few months ago and we had a good laugh about it over the phone one day. The next day, I decided I would no longer use that opening sentence since it didn’t serve its purpose. I would find other ways of making our readers feel like there is a real person behind the articles.

I’m Even Quirkier than I Thought

Here is where it gets really quirky. I got writer’s block. I sat there with a steaming cup of coffee at my desk ready to write, and nothing came out. Until I wrote, “Hello and happy whatever day it is!”

I then started writing and once I got going strong, I went back and deleted the sentence. It took me a couple of months to let go of this crutch. I still love that opening sentence and will continue to use it, but probably not every day.

Your Turn

It made me wonder what quirks you might have when it comes to writing. If you do have one, does it shine through in your articles? I would love to hear about it. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Ha ha, great post. I love to finish my articles with ‘Thanks for reading’. I really appreciate if people take the time to read until the end, so I want to truly thank them. Shall I stop doing that?
