Have you been considering adding a video to your blog?
Do you love seeing infographics used on other sites to display information?
Today is the 6th installment of our video blogging series. At the end of each month we have been publishing video blogs. Our goal has been to see if video blogging is worth your time.
When we started our video blogging series, we wanted to see:
- If it would be easy to do – answering questions like, “do I need special equipment?”, “how much of my time is it going to take up?” and, “can just about anyone do it?”
- If it would impact engagement – are videos something my readers are even interested in? What type of videos do readers/watchers respond most to?
- If it would be a worthwhile venture – I personally like to see a return on my investment. I can be patient and that is why I decided to give this venture a year; but, at some point, I want to see a return on my investment.
To do this, we have been experimenting with different types of videos and different lengths. Mostly, it’s been me talking. I’ve been answering readers’ questions, asking my own questions, offering how-tos and blogging tips. We’ve published videos that are 2 minutes in length to over 5 minutes.
Looking forward to the next 6 months, I’m hoping to dabble in other kinds of videos for those of us who, like me, don’t relish in their face being on the internet.
After 6 months of doing this, something hit me. It is a little well known fact, that honestly I’ve known for years. However, when you apply it to the blogging world has a profound impact especially concerning SEO.
If you are new to the blogging world, a quick definition of SEO is:
SEO or search engine optimization is the method of utilizing techniques and strategies to increase higher placements in search engine results and subsequently visitors to a website.
So what this little well known statistic that hit me like a ton of bricks the other day? According to the Social Science Research Network,
65% Of People are Visual Learners
What is a Visual Learner?
Visual learners love diagrams, charts, graphics and maps when trying to understand information.
This is why pictures, graphics, infographics and videos are so appealing to our audiences.
When applied to the blogging world, the impact this information has on the use of visual content is huge. If most of our readers receive information in a visual way, let’s present at least some of our information in a way that appeals to them.
There are a lot of really great reasons to add videos to your blog. The simple fact that most (being more than 50%) people are visual learners just shows the potential that videos have as well as infographics and pictures.
With competition for blogging authority growing, making sure we provide our information to our readers in a compelling way has never been so important.
Do you use videos on your blog? If not, what is keeping you from doing it?
