5 Unique Ways to Keep You Motivated With Blogging

5 Unique Ways to Keep You Motivated With Blogging

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Blogging is like a Marathon?”

Have you ever stopped to think how long a marathon really is?

I have a confession to make. I run. Nothing too impressive and on really big hills, you will catch me walking, especially if I’m pushing my almost 2 and one-half year old in the stroller.

In the last two weeks, I’ve gone from running 3 miles to running 6 miles five days a week. I have to tell you, I’ve been pretty proud of myself. Six miles of running (and walking up hills for an hour). That is a long time.

My new found confidence got me thinking, well dreaming actually. I thought maybe the sky is the limit, maybe I should start thinking about running a 10K or maybe half marathon or even a real marathon. Then, I asked my husband, how long is a half marathon?

“A half marathon is 13.1 miles, exactly half of a marathon,” he says so matter of factly, like he wasn’t crushing all my hopes and dreams.

All I can think to myself is, that is more than double what I am doing now. That’s like running really fast for 2 hours and that’s only a half marathon.

Marathons are really long.

Blogging is a Marathon

I know I’ve said it and I know you’ve read it. “Blogging is a Marathon”, but have you ever really stopped to think about how long a marathon really is? I’ll tell you, it’s really long.

The truth is though, blogging is like a marathon. It’s something you have to continue doing and doing and doing. It has amazing rewards, but those rewards may not be achieved until you have been at it for a long time.

5 Ways to Stay Motivated With Blogging

The question that I have is how do you stay motivated? It’s easy in the beginning to dream about blogging for years, just like it’s really easy for me to dream about running a half – just a half, not a whole – marathon.

Today, I wanted to take some time to share with you some great ways to stay motivated.

  1. Routine or Ritual

Having a routine or a ritual is a great way to stay motivated. Writing and brainstorming ideas will become just another part of your day. For more information on blogging rituals, check out an article we published called, Do You Have a Ritual For Writing Blog Articles?

  2. Editorial Calendars

My editorial calendars keep me sane. Having a plan has really motivated me to keep going. Every month I take a chunk of time to simply plan and to think about what I really want to accomplish with each of the blogs I write for.

In an article we published called, Why We Shouldn’t Give Up on Article Editorial Calendars, I share some great tips and the template for the same editorial calendar I use.

  3. Get Inspired

To be able to inspire your readers, you need to be inspired. Find writers and bloggers that you just love to read or songs you love to listen to. I love to read Copyblogger and drink a strong cup of coffee to get inspired.

  4. Write About Your Passion

When I’m really struggling with staying motivated, I’ll take time to write about something I’m extremely passionate about. That’s where articles like, Never Give Up on a Dream and Never, Ever Give Up on a Dream came from.

  5. Give Yourself a Break

If you’re feeling really unmotivated, it might be time to take a break. Give yourself a week or two weeks, but don’t stay away too long. Sometimes just giving yourself permission to walk away from your keyboard is all you need.

Blogging is a marathon and marathons are really long. Stay motivated by taking care of yourself and following the tips above.

Thank you for sharing how to stay motivated on the way to winning the blogging marathon Christine. I agree with all your points and number 5 is specially true. Sometimes all you need is to give yourself permission not to be inspired and new ideas start to flow.
Hobbies and quiet time are necessary in healing whatever causes writer’s block. For me sitting at the piano or watering the plants is a great way to trigger my creative juices.
Looking forward to a lot more from you and for when you manage to run your half marathon. If you already doubled your distance, you can do it again!

    • Hi Veronica,

Thank you so much for sharing your unique ways for finding inspiration, from watering your plants to sitting at the piano. I love both suggestions. Thank you so much for your support, I think the half marathon just might be in my future. 😉

  2. I was away on a cruise this week and kept expecting a blog idea to roll to mind. Despite all the beautiful seagreen water and scenery, nothing happened. I’m a bit disappointed but what I’ve learned this year is to not force it. I can feel some things floating around and think that when I look at the photos Ive taken, something will pop. I do have to be inspired to write or to design a necklace. Patience.

    • Hey Roslyn,

A cruise sounds amazing right now. Maybe that exactly what you needed, a little break. I’m looking forward to reading more blogs from you. Thanks for sharing!

This post is true not just for blogging but also for any person starting with anything like an entrepreneur. It always happen that you’re really motivated for the initial part but as the days go by without positive results; thoughts keeps running in your heads “Why am I doing this?” If you’re really passionate about it only then you would be able to answer this question. If you can get yourself excited again, and keep going, you’ll get there eventually. But if you give up, you won’t.

Thanks for these motivational tips 🙂

    • Hi Sourav,

I love your point, “If you can get yourself excited again, and keep going, you’ll get there eventually”. Sticking with it and not giving up can really be that spice that separates us from our competition. Thank you so much for your comment! You brought some great points to the conversation. 🙂
