Seven Website Optimization Basics

SEO Tips - 7 Sensational SEO Basics

  1. Domain name
    • Research: Research your domain name to be sure that it was not used by spammers in the past.
  2. Create a Google Webmaster Account at:  Google Search Console
    • Verify Ownership: Verify ownership of both the www and non-www version of you domain name.
    • WWW Preference: Tell Google which “www” version that you prefer and be sure to include a 301 permanent redirect to your choice.
  3. Strategize your site’s design
    • Navigation: The navigation on your site should be logical so that your visitors can easier navigate to find the information they are looking for.
    • Design: Don’t focus too much on “fanciness” that your site does not have searchable text for the search engines to spider or index.
  4. Web Pages
    • Focus: Each page on you website should be focused on one logical topic.
    • Keywords: Include relevant keywords naturally in your copy. Write for your visitors and not the search engines by incorporating keywords.
  5. Call to Action
    • Include a call to action on each and every page. For example: Contact us, Buy now (for a product) or Sign up for our newsletter.
  6. Page Creation
    • Keyword File Name Optimization: For non-dynamic sites, use keywords in the file name in lower case and separated by hyphens.
    • Unique Titles: Include a unique meta title on each page. This title will be displayed in the search results.
    • Unique Meta Description: Include a unique meta description for each page that might be used as the snippet in search engine results.
    • Meta Keywords: Don’t worry about meta keywords. Google search ignores meta keywords.
    • Anchor text: Include descriptive anchor text in every link in the copy. For example, instead of “For more information Click Here” with “Click Here linked, consider, “For more information, see “Web design services” (your services or product).
  7. Be Careful
    • Don’t participate in linking schemes to artificially pass Page Rank (PR) to your page.
    • Don’t buy links to boost your page’s PR.

Google’s Developer Programs Tech Lead, Maile Ohye, advises new website owners to “Don’t focus too much on “fanciness” that your site does not have searchable text for the search engines to spider or index.” This would definitely be the case when a website owner includes graphics with unsearchable text instead of searchable text.
