How Often Should You Blog?

Is blogging once a week enough?

What if I just don’t have enough good content?

In the article about creating great content, “3 Ways to Make Your Blog Content Great”, I recommended that if your company is blogging, you should be posting 3-5 times a week and that for we should be really be posting articles 20 times a month.

This “20 times a month” is quite the number. Research shows that companies that post 20 times a month see the most return on their investment. When it comes to search engine optimization (SEO) and the frequency that search engines display your work, the more the better.

“In this framework, frequency of publishing blog posts matters a lot. Our research has shown that businesses who blog 16 to 20 times per month get over two times more traffic than those who blog less than four times per month.” – Hubspot

Not too long after I posted that article, a friend contacted me asking me about how a business can post 3-5 times a week without creating noise on their blog. He said that by posting so much, followers would lose interest because our blogs are just more noise on the Internet. I say yes and no.

Yes, Blogging 3-5 Times a Week Creates Noise

If you are posting 5 times a week, but none of your articles are remotely interesting or related to what you do, than yes you are creating Internet noise and risk losing your followers. Do not post an article to just post an article.

No, Blogging 3-5 Times a Week Does Not Create Noise

Every blog writer’s challenge is to write great content for blog articles 3-5 times a week. It is not easy for a business to write three articles a week. However, the value in writing three high quality article a week offers such a significant value that it is worth the time. For your blog to not to sound like noise, it has to have great content offering value.

Why Companies Blog – a quick review on why companies blog.

  • Information that your company puts on your blog affects purchasing decisions. A Hubspot study showed that 71% of people said that blogs affect their purchasing decisions.
  • Having a blog gives our business the unique advantage to connect with our customers in a personal way, allowing for the know-like-trust factor.
  • The SEO Factor. The more we post articles that have great content, the more likely our potential customer will find us, re-post us and grow our customer base.
  • Your blog is like your very own newspaper. Not only do you own the information you put out into the Internet, but you also can control what you put out there. Lately, I’ve been watching Mad Men and Don Draper’s and the famous quote comes to mind, “if you don’t like what is being said change the conversation”. Publishing blog articles allow you to do that.
